| People’s Summit Against Poverty, 3-4 Sept 2005 |
| The People's Summit Against Poverty was held just ahead of the UN World Summit to give the people of the region a voice to discus their countries’ progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and how to influence their governments. |

| Mr. V.P. Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, launched the summit. Other speakers included, A.B Bardhan, Secretary of the Communist Party of India, and Dr. Sayeeda Hameed, a member of the Indian government Planning Commission – the department responsible for the implementation of the MDGs in India. The Summit also marked the release of the Indian Citizen’s Report on MDGs. The report evaluated the Indian Government’s progress on the MDGs and the expression of these in the National Development Goals. On 3 September, over 12,000 participants from the Summit joined a massive rally and marched through the streets of Delhi. |

| The People’s Charter – conclusions from the People’s Summit
| The Summit concluded with a People’s Charter, which called on politicians to focus on poverty issues |
| |
| It also demanded a change in current political systems - from their bias toward the rich and to fully implement a pro-poor political system. The summit urged politicians to rid South Asia of the prevailing caste-driven political agenda |
| The People’s Charter also sent out a message to world leaders that the people who are hungry now cannot wait another day. Leaders must take action now to meet the MDG commitments to end poverty. An overwhelming message came out of the summit – the people of South Asia will not tolerate the privatization of public services. Every person must have access to quality public services including education, health and water, and it is the place of the state to provide these. |
| There was also a call to open the borders of South Asia and to stop the restriction of movement within the area, which is seen to exacerbate the rising problems of trafficking across the region. Summit called for a concerted effort to free the region of fundamentalist forces that bring conflict and terrorism. All governments should work together to ensure peace and harmony |
