THE 3rd CIVIL SOCIETY REVIEW OF THE NCMP
25 May 2007, Delhi
The participation of more than 400 people from 22 states* of India and representing almost every strand of the civil society fabric in the country enabled a passionate discourse on the performance of the government, and the strategies for public action in the day-long Review Meeting held on 23rd May.

Comrade A B Bardhan (General Secretary, Communist Party of India) and Shri Ramdas Athavale (President, Republican Party of India) set a fiery tone to the discussions by exhorting civil society groups not to compromise on their demands, and pressure the government to provide not just a 'minimum program' but the maximum benefits for the people who live in poverty and exclusion.
The context of public discontent and the need to combine resources and strategies to ensure results from the government was reinforced by the presentations made across the day and the open discussion with the Members of Parliament, Shri Haribhau Rathod & Shri Bashist Narayan at the end of the Review.
The imperative for diverse but strategically connected actions across the country - ranging agitation to advocacy - and a collective resolve to take the 10-point People's Charter of Demands on the NCMP to every Parliamentarian, every Legislator were among the directions for 2007-08 that were outlined in the meeting. Presentations from Janadesh 2007, Action 2007 and the Right to Information Campaign further reinforced the need for civil society groups and movements to work together towards key political outcomes.
The Civil Society Report Card on the NCMP was released on the following day. The Report Card was developed through the responses of 500 civil society organizations from 20 states, and in relation to 20 questions on the performance of the government in relation to 5 Themes namely, Health & Education; Land, Livelihood & Food Security; Governance; Social Exclusion & Disrimination; Peace & Security
The Release of the Civil Society Report Card has been reported in the national editions of dailies such as the The Hindustan Times, DNA, The Hindu; widely read local papers like the Punjab Kesari (Delhi), the television media - CNN-IBN, Sahara News; and news agencies including Reuters, PTI, IANS, Gulf News & Zee News.
