THE CHILDREN’S MARCH AGAINST POVERTY
30 January 2007, National Stadium, New Delhi
9-Is-Mine" is a children’s initiative to ensure that the government commits 9% of the GDP to public expenditure on Health & Education, as promised in the National Common Minimum Program, and supported by Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (Keep the Promise Campaign).
THE CHILDREN’S MARCH AGAINST POVERTY
The Children’s March Against Poverty was planned with representatives of diverse groups as a momentous finale of our advocacy for Education and Health on January 30, 2007 – and to submit the ‘9-Is-Mine’ Declaration signed by more than 200,000 children to the Government of India on Martyr’s Day, which is also a month before the announcement of the Union Budget.
The spirited involvement of special guests Om Prakash Gurjar, Dr. Kiran Bedi, Minar Pimple, Swami Agnivesh and Leslie Lewis enabled the creation of an emphatic message and a powerful experience for over 5000 children from across Delhi, Faridabad, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, who were present for the event. The youth band, Jigri and young performers like Ankita Prasad - who composed a special theme song for campaign - ensured that the event was infused with energy and optimism, in the spirit of 9-Is-Mine!
In addition to radio and television broadcasts of the program, over 15 newspapers carried photos and reports of this initiative today. A special word of appreciation for the schools and organizations who made special arrangements to ensure that Organizations such as Perfect Relations, Showtime Events, St. Columba’s, UDYEM, OWSA & Oxfam provided us with the much needed support for logistics and media management.
